IMPORTANT FACTS ABOUT SPECIAL OLYMPICS

Special Olympics is:

• the UK's largest sports charity for people with a learning disability which provides year round sports training in 24 different Olympic type sports for athletes of all ages and all sporting abilities

• the only world-wide sports movement for people with a learning disability

• the only organisation authorised by the International Olympic Committee to use the word 'Olympics' world-wide

• different from Paralympics in that it provides sports opportunities for people of all abilities and not just elite athletes

The Special Olympics mission is to:

• provide training 48 weeks in the year to encourage fitness, commitment and discipline through sports

• provide as many Special Olympics athletes with the opportunity to participate, train and compete in as wide a variety of sports and events as possible

SPECIAL OLYMPICS SPORTS

The official Special Olympics Summer sports are:
Aquatics (swimming and diving), athletics (track and field) basketball, bowling, cycling, equestrian, football (soccer), gymnastics (artistic and rhythmic), ten-pin bowling, roller-skating, softball, tennis, volleyball.

The official Special Olympics Winter sports are:
Alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, figure skating, speed skating, floor hockey.
