Interview with Caroline Hamilton broadcast on Radio 5 Live, Saturday 4 December

Interviewer: ... Caroline Hamilton has pulled over her sledge to chat from a satellite phone somewhere. Hello Caroline.
CH: Hello
Interviewer: Where are you?
CH: We're in the middle of Antarctica.
Interviewer: Somewhere...
CH: We've done 84 miles from the edge of Antarctica, from Hercules Inlet, and we're sitting in our tent.
Interviewer: Are you eating?
CH: Not yet, we've just got up. We're about to have our breakfast, Marks and Spencers toffee and pecan crunch, I hope.
Interviewer: For breakfast? Golly. Have you had any problems so far?
CH: Um, no, the weather's been quite kind to us, we've had lots of sunshine, yesterday there was lots of cloud cover and it was very difficult to navigate, that's probably been our biggest problem so far.
Interviewer: Now we were talking about you maybe getting to the South Pole for the 1st of January, are you on target for that?
CH: Well we've had... the very very bad weather meant that we couldn't arrive in Antarctica until a few weeks ago so we are three weeks late starting so it's going to be difficult to get there for the millennium but we'll keep trying.
Interviewer: You were also very worried about those windspeeds which were going to be battering you in the face all the time you were walking. Are they as bad as you expected?
CH: Yes, quite bad, and we have to walk in single file with our heads all covered up, we can't talk to each other at all.
Interviewer: Oh, so you can't talk until you get into your tent?
CH: No, we can stop, every hour we stop and eat some more and we talk to each other then.
Interviewer: Just finally, what are your plans for Christmas Day then?
CH: Well, we thought we'd go shopping, you know, take in a few movies, that sort of thing!
Interviewer: Well, you keep plodding on. Oh, I think we've lost her. They were worried about their batteries running out. We'll try and catch up with them as they near their target in a couple of weeks time.
