Glaciologist's note

The loud booms the girls reported on the 31st are not rare but always alarming because the surface may drop an inch or so, leaving the skier with the impression that a breaking snow-bridge is dropping you down a crevasse. This is due to the collapse of "depth hoar" layers (very low density snow) which develop over time at a depth of a few feet. The collapse can propagate into the distance, giving a prolonged roar. There is a German name for the phenomenon: Firnstoss.*

It was not an earthquake. Antarctica is the most seismically inactive continent on the face of the earth.

Charles Swithinbank, Glaciologist
