Caroline, Ann, Zoe, Rosie and Pom made their final triumphant steps to the South Pole at 06:00GMT this morning, Monday 24 January 2000. Caroline told an interviewer that they couldn't see the Scott-Admunsen base until they were just two miles away, when it rose suddenly above the curtain of snow in front of them. On reaching the base, some of its occupants came out to greet them and the team planted a Union Jack and sang the National Anthem.

They had 3.5 hours following this to savour the moment for themselves. At 09:30 they put their call into HRH The Prince of Wales, who spoke to each of them in turn for about 15 minutes. He is quoted as being 'very proud of his ladies'. They spent the rest of the day on the phone solidly, doing an interview every 15 minutes. The last interview was scheduled for 19:00 in the evening. They start again at 05:50 in the morning with a GMTV wake-up.

Expedition base in the UK has been completely deluged with calls of congratulations and requests from all parts of the media for interviews.

It is envisaged that they will be picked up sometime on Tuesday morning (weather permitting) and flown back to Patriot Hills, from where they will get onto the next available Hercules back to Punta Arenas. So, it could be 3-4 days or it could be 3-4 weeks - only Mother Nature knows!
